Overview

Vivekananda College was established in 1970 with grants from UGC and Delhi Administration. The objective was to make higher education available to young women from the trans-Yamuna area. The college began its journey from a school building in Gandhi Nagar. Initially, most of the students came from a semi-rural background and were first generation learners, with limited resources of time and mobility at their disposal. Even today this holds true for a large number of our students but there is increasing diversity. A process of mentoring and interaction beyond classroom teaching continues to be one of the special characteristics of the college.

On 26th of October 1976, the foundation stone for the college building in its new campus at Vivek Vihar was laid by Professor S. Nurul Hasan. A new academic block of 20 classrooms (each with a seating capacity of 60 students) was added in 2013, as part of the OBC expansion plan. Today, the college has a sprawling campus spread on an area of about 10 acres with a built up area of 10825.36 sq. mts. with more than 2000 students and 90 teachers. A total of 61 spacious classrooms, five computer labs, two food technology labs, two applied psychology labs, two music rooms, two seminar rooms, a medical room, open stage, sports room, state-of-the-art hockey turf as well as a synthetic athletic track and several other infrastructural amenities makes the college campus one of the best in the regions. The Vivekananda Auditorium and the Sharda Hall witnesses a host of lectures, seminars, debates and other academic and cultural programmes throughout the year.

The college offers a diversity of courses. A total of eleven UG and two PG courses are offered. Courses (Hons.and Programme) offered relate to Arts, Commerce, and Sciences. Several Add-on courses and one self financing course is offered as well. Our college has consistently set high academic standards with toppers.

As part of its ongoing engagement with the larger community, the college has provided assistance and acted as a resource base. The Social Outreach and Community development (SOCDC), Vidya Vistar and NSS volunteers of the college have actively facilitated this process of community outreach.

The main focus of college activities remains the empowerment of women and inculcation of values of self-worth and responsibility.

Swami Vivekananda’s Quote : “Arise, awake and not to stop until the goal is achieved”, was a passionate call for National awakening during colonialism. Beyond the barrier of time, this quote is still relevant. We must act vigorously with firm belief and planning to achieve goals. Success in life can be achieved by bringing changes in our daily activities and habits. Consistent efforts and positive outlook bring desired outcomes and achievement of goals in life. Life will always be full of challenges and obstacles, but optimism and strong willpower can limit any challenge.

Jeffrey Gitomer rightly observes, “Obstacles can’t stop you, problems can’t stop you. Most of all other people can’t stop you, only you can stop you’. So, incessantly and tirelessly keep working towards your goals.
